GdR4: The Master
and finally found time and opportunity to continue this little guide to the sort of RPGs, we got talking about the Master.
Every self-respecting RPG consists of two distinct groups: that of the player and the master. It is often defined as a narrator in the campaign, in other cases as the one who enforces the rules. These concepts are quite true, but often there is a tendency to forget certain aspects equally important.
The most important is that the Master must be impartial, and between the various players to avoid giving favors to the detriment of others, both in its own respect, so as not to create imbalances his favor. The Masters do not play against the players, the Master is actually a guide for players. This is a general concept, which is still subject to a minimum of flexibility, primarily governed by common sense.
and common sense requires that the Master maintains a high level of attention and interest for the adventure and the countryside; this means on the one hand to create interesting stories to follow and to find out (do adventure is a bit like reading a book, in some respects), on the other always provide valid reasons for players interested in playing. Often this results in providing opportunities that interest them directly, both in terms of rewards, but (especially) in terms of evolution of the character. Always remember that an RPG does it mean to play a role, not just to level and find the best equipment, and is interpreted under the aspect of the role that the Master must ask, first of all, the perspective of the adventure.
a rule, the regulation should be known by heart by the Master. In reality this is mere utopia, especially those highly structured and complicated regulations. By the way, regulations are often very detailed, and tend to be moved to a game more similar to that in RPGs Wargames, but most tend to limit the Master, especially those with little charisma or malice to prevail on the game.
This is because every move can be tied with the Regulation, obliges the master to try to track and monitor every aspect of "technical", leaving out the narrative aspects of pathos and evolution of the character, especially when it faces Players are extremely practical. It is therefore difficult to insert a choreographed scene, or having the specified, then when you are forced to slip into precise patterns, which by their nature, are distorting it or take it to an unintended direction.
The good Master is one who knows how to improvise when the situation is ambiguous when the regulation is wrong, or when to make that turn events in a certain direction. This is the most difficult to have, because it requires speed and intuition. These capabilities also allow you to capture details of the situation at hand that can provide ideas of narrative and game is not expected, thus enriching the campaign.
is then that the Masters is not and should not be a simple figure that applies to the regulation, the Master is a guide, a beacon for the players, for which plans a year and a 'adventure that will showcase, enhance and evolve the characters and the basic aspects of the characters, through stories and narratives that can involve both through the story, either through interpretation or through the details of the various scenes.
